Cigarettes After Sex

Cigarettes After Sex is an American dream pop band, formed in El Paso, Texas in 2008 by Greg Gonzalez. The band is known for their ethereal, limerent and often dream-like musical style, lyrics often based on the themes of romance and love, as well as Gonzalez's voice, which has been described as androgynous. While marketed as an ambient pop band, Cigarettes After Sex are also considered to be shoegaze, slowcare and indie rock.

CAS History

Cigarettes After Sex, the ambient pop band, got its name from a spontaneous idea. Greg Gonzalez, the band’s founder and lead vocalist, came up with it while working on the project that would eventually become the band’s first EP. He has said that the name was inspired by the hazy, dreamlike, and intimate mood he wanted to capture in the music — much like the quiet, reflective feeling people might have after a romantic encounter or a deep conversation, symbolized by sharing a cigarette. The name also ties into the sensual and nostalgic themes prevalent in their lyrics and sound.
